Rhesa Houston, DVM
My role as a veterinarian is to maximize the relationship between people and animals also known as the human-animal bond. My goal is to create and maintain a mutually beneficial and positive human-animal bond relationship between you and your pet. Outside of acquiring my veterinary training and degree, I have also acquired additional education and training and I am a Human-Animal Bond Certified veterinary practitioner. I apply this additional training to meet you and your pet's bonding needs. With human-animal bond training and over 20 years of veterinary experience, I am able to deliver more specialized care. I apply my training on human-animal bond science, communication, community engagement, animal welfare and wellness and medical care needed to create and maintain a positive human-animal bond and maximize the therapeutic application of the human-animal bond when using assistance animals.

Physical exam - health checks and health screenings
The physical examination is an important part of your pet’s preventive care, but it is just the beginning of a thorough evaluation of your pet’s overall health and wellbeing. It is an invaluable resource that provides me insight into the health of my patients, who cannot speak and explain what may be troubling them. Routine exams can also help me discover an emerging problem as early as possible, allowing further diagnostic tests or treatment to be initiated before a bigger problem develops. I recommend regular wellness exams for the same reason your physician and dentist recommends them – if I can detect a problem in its early stages, it's more likely to be treated and resolved with less expense, less difficulty and better success.
Puppy/Kitten care - Senior Pet Care
As stated by the American Animal Hospital Association, a pet’s life can be divided into four stages: puppy/kitten, young adult, mature adult, and senior. As your pet matures, they require different approaches to healthcare as they progress from puppy/kitten to senior pet. When you understand your pet’s life stage, you and Assistance Animals Consulting will become partners in providing an individualized healthcare approach to every home visit. The end result: maximizing the human-animal bond and a lifetime of optimal care your pet needs and deserves!
Dog & Cat Vaccinations
Pets should be vaccinated to protect them from many highly contagious and deadly diseases. Pet vaccinations play an essential role in keeping your pet healthy. Pet vaccinations help prevent pet diseases, and can help you avoid costly treatments for preventable animal illnesses. Vaccinating your pet can also prevent the spread of certain diseases, such as rabies and Leptospirosis to your family. Vaccinations help to protect your pet and your family.
Parasite Prevention and Control
Parasites can harm your pets by decreasing their ability to absorb nutrients, causing vomiting or diarrhea, or even damaging their intestines and skin. Parasites also pose a threat to human health. Some pet parasites cause zoonotic infections, which means they can be transferred from pets to people. Most parasitic infections can be prevented with a good parasite preventative program.
Laboratory Diagnostics
We use laboratory tests to establish a baseline of a pet’s health during wellness exams, to diagnose illness, and to safely prescribe medications. Our pets can’t tell us when they feel sick, and for this reason, regular laboratory work is even more essential to monitoring and maintaining a pet’s ongoing health.
Microchipping:
A microchip provides secure, reliable, and permanent identification, which greatly increases the likelihood that your pet, if lost, will be returned home to you.
Nail Trims:
Important to prevent pain. Keeping nails trimmed will help prevent painful broken claws/nails, which can occur if one of the sharp, long tips becomes caught in the carpet or on the edge of the sofa. Nails can also grow too long and imbed into the paw pads which is extremely painful. Prevents damage to your skin as well as home flooring and furniture.
Anal Gland Expressions:
Dogs need to have their anal glands regularly expressed to prevent the occurrence of anal sac infections caused by build-up of the sac fluid. The fluid build-up could also lead to a painful condition and cause the glands to rupture.
Assistance Animal Evaluations
Provides a specialized behavior, physical and psychological veterinary health evaluation. Assistance animals such as service dogs, emotional support animals and therapy animals serve to benefit humans other than their handlers in a variety of professional and nonprofessional settings. These factors make assistance, and therapy dogs essentially valuable and impose a need for a high level of primary veterinary care and behavioral evaluations.
Telehealth Care
Provides you as a pet owner a lot of peace of mind because you have the ability to reach out directly to me and my team and get advice on next medical steps. This is a communication tool used to support you as a pet owner without the necessity of a hands-on physical examination. It allows easy and convenient communication.
